Legal Initiative

The Climate Justice Fund will prioritize support for legal initiatives in and from the global south, especially those which seek to hold high emitting industries to account. The Climate Justice Fund seeks to support climate legal initiatives, including litigation, in those areas where the greatest impacts are being felt. We will be fast moving and provide small grants for small to medium sized organizations and enable the collaboration with private law firms and practitioners as well as academic legal research and expert evidence.

Building capacity

The CJF aims for interconnected yet independent climate legal initiatives, which are spread out across the globe. We believe that capacity building is a crucial component, and necessary to build a global legal community, well versed in the emerging legal realities associated with climate change. We will support workshops and training for lawyers, Judges, legislators and, impacted communities. We will establish communities of practice and support access to justice for those who need it most. We will also contribute to the creation of databases relevant to climate legal action.

Research

The CJF supports research that is instrumental for building climate legal action. We will support academic legal research and research that can be used for legal efforts in holding the fossil fuel and other high emitters accountable for their actions

What is the Climate Justice Fund?

The Climate Justice Fund is a one of a kind financial facility to support the development and use of legal avenues towards global climate justice. We seek to build the broader enabling environment for the international climate justice movement through research, capacity building and collaboration between lawyers, scientists, climate change affected communities and other stakeholders.

Designing and planning the pilot phase

Work is underway to put in place the Climate Justice Fund Pilot Programme to commence in 2019. Check back here soon for more details.
